Instrument Purpose: To determine the ultimate aerobic biodegradability and disintegration of materials under controlled composting conditions by measuring the of carbon dioxide evolved. The test material is mixed with inoculum and introduced into a static composting vessel, where the mixture undergoes vigorous aerobic composting at temperature, oxygen concentration, and humidity. During the aerobic biodegradation of the test material, carbon dioxide, water, mineralized inorganic salts, and new are all products of complete biodegradation. The evolved carbon dioxide is continuously monitored and periodically measured in both the test vessel and the blank vessel, and the total of carbon dioxide evolved is accumulated. The ratio of the actual amount of carbon dioxide evolved from the test material during the test to the theoretical amount of carbon dioxide that material can produce is the biodegradation percentage. The theoretical release of carbon dioxide can be calculated based on the measured total organic carbon (TOC) content. biodegradation percentage does not include the amount of carbon that has been converted to new cellular biomass, as it is not metabolized to carbon dioxide during the test. Additionally, the disintegration of the test material can be determined at the end of the test, and the mass loss of the test material can also be measured.
